Weekend to Remember!

Weekends like this past one are what we live for as we travel full time. We didn’t have anything special planned to be honest- we were free to explore and tossed around several ideas before we settled on playing it day by day. After an early morning appointment on Saturday we came home, ate a quick lunch and then headed to downtown San Antonio. Our first stop was the Historic Market Square (El Mercado). This is the largest Mexican marketplace outside of Mexico. If you really want to see what the vibe of San Antonio is like then this is a “must see” destination. There are multiple vendors lining the square that sell all types of merchandise and the restaurants are second to none. (Our advice is to just let your nose guide you to the one that smells the most heavenly to you!) There is also live music that adds to the atmosphere as well. It’s really an interesting place to visit.

After spending the afternoon downtown we headed a few miles away to visit the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Little Flower. This Roman Catholic Church is one of 84 in the country receiving the papal designation of "minor basilica". As you can see from a few of our pictures this church is absolutely stunning! We were unable to go inside as it was closed to the public when we arrived, so we will also plan to a separate trip back to see the inside.

As we wrapped up the evening, we decided to check out Papa Nachos Cantina. It was rated pretty high in our area and they did not disappoint. The signature dish for the restaurant is the Beef Fajitas and to be honest we rated it 5/5 stars for sure! David and I both agreed that the flavor was amazing. The only regret was that we could not eat more of it. 🐷

On Sunday we woke up and decided to go to Sweet Paris Creperie & Cafe. For those in the know- David is a bit of a coffee snob and as of right now they have his vote for the best coffee in town. The crepes are excellent as well, but he always deducts points for poor coffee, so the fact that this place has excellent food AND excellent coffee makes it a win for him. I will add that they did a wonderful job decorating the cafe to look like a French cafe. In a region that is dominated with TexMex and Hispanic culture it is a fun change of pace to sit in an atmosphere that was more of a European vibe.

We then drove back to the house, grabbed Frodo and headed out for an hour drive to Wimberly, TX. This city was a shot in the dark for us. Our goal is to go someplace new every weekend, so we chose Wimberly because we read that they had built an “Old West" town (Pioneer Town) just outside of the downtown area. It was definitely a fun destination to get some western style pictures. We learned that during the spring and summer they even have an ice cream store open at one end of the town. Admittedly, this part of the trip was more for David than for myself, but I was even impressed by the detail of it all.

With that said, the Pioneer Town was worth the drive all by itself, but the city of Wimberly has so much more to offer. We spent the rest of the day exploring all the shops, restaurants and parks in the area. We had a lot of fun and everyone we met was so friendly. Several people stopped to talk to us and nobody seemed in a hurry to end the conversation. Of course, Frodo was the real star. He allowed everyone to pet him and several people even asked to take his picture. We even found a cowboy hat for Frodo and he graciously modeled it for us.

Another interesting thing about Wimberly is that they have large painted boots scattered throughout the town that turned the visit into something of a scavenger hunt. The boots are hidden all over the place. Some are right out in the open and others are tucked away. We felt like kids again laughing every time we found another one. It was an unexpected joy for us on this trip.

Another interesting find is a stretch of road that crosses over the river on River Road just outside of town. That particular part of the road is so low you can reach your hand out of the car and high five the kayakers floating by. There is NO railing on either side, so it is important to stay focused on the causeway. However, it is worth a picture as you drive over the river.

All in all, this was exactly what we were hoping for this weekend. As mentioned at the beginning of this post, this is what we love about this lifestyle. It’s like taking a vacation and really getting to see everything you want to see and doing everything you want to do. Generally when you visit a place while on vacation, time is usually limited, so you always miss out on something because you have to pick and choose what you will see on each trip. Since we are traveling full time we can now spend as much time as we want exploring. We can also learn what it is like to live in a specific region and we get to meet all kinds of different people from various backgrounds and belief systems. It’s everything we hoped for and more.
