Part of the joy when traveling is finding something unanticipated or unexpected. You are unprepared for these hidden gems, but they become the thing that you wish you could bottle up and share with friends or family back home. Inevitably, when David and I find one of these treasures, both know it is the gem for that trip at roughly the same time.
Obviously, we both anticipated finding a lot of unique places, experiences, or things here in San Antonio. We knew that The Alamo, the missions, or even the famous Riverwalk were special, but we also knew that we were in store for some hidden finds along the way. Of course, we all know that the best finds are usually ones you discover by accident. One particular treasure that we found by surprise is The Point Park.

You might be thinking this is another park with hiking trails, beautiful scenery, or a cascading waterfall, but you would be wrong. This “park” is not a park at all, but instead a place with multiple food trucks. Yes, I said food trucks. To most people this wouldn’t seem to be much of a “hidden gem” to say the least, but for any of you who are food truck aficionados you already know you can find some of the best local food at these trucks. The Point Park offers different trucks featuring Texas BBQ, Greek, Thai, TexMex, and Asian fares, plus a stand alone coffee and alcohol bar. Having all this variety sure does makes dinner time a lot more interesting. Sometimes we even mix and match- Have you ever had some Texas brisket with a Horchata to wash it down? Granted, it may not be a Big Red (the standard drink when paired with Texas BBQ), but it tastes delightful and we would strongly recommend it.

While the food trucks are what really make this place stand out, they have done so much more with the area. There are multiple seating areas for people to sit and eat outside, so that the delicious food can be enjoyed fresh and hot. It’s a mishmash of picnic tables, booth seating, circular tables, etc with heating lamps and fire pits scattered throughout, along with multiple covered/shaded areas as well. There is also a separate area with a big screen television outside (always tuned to the big games) for friends and family to gather and root for their teams to win. Lastly, there is a gated playground built onsite for kids to enjoy as well.

While all of that probably sounded a little bit like a sales pitch- it really is a brilliant business plan by the owners. The first time we discovered this place we stopped in on a particularly cooler evening coupled with an unexpected temperature drop that kept some of the locals away. As a result, we pretty much had the place to ourselves. Since then, we haven’t gotten back to take pictures of the packed parking lot and full tables that occur most of the time. With that said, I will admit that what we like best, apart from the food, is the atmosphere. Everyone is so friendly. Strangers talk to each other around fire pits while eating, Kids are running around playing, and they even allow dogs (leashed) into the park much to Frodo’s delight. The vibe really makes this place one of those unanticipated gems we were hoping to find in San Antonio.
