As many of you already know, my husband is a wealth of historical knowledge. However he also has this innate ability to know odd facts about every area we visit. Needless to say, I wasn’t too surprised when he announced that we were going to be visiting the geographical center of the United States. I will admit that I thought that this particular spot would probably be some kitschy tourist destination, but as it turns out this location was actually the pretty interesting.
The monument for geographical center of the United states is located next to the Center of the Nation visitor center in Belle Fourche, South Dakota.
Of course there is always some discrepancy on actual geographical center based on changing shorelines and landscapes. Originally, just the contiguous 48 states were included in the calculation (making Lebanon, Kansas the geographical center) but including Alaska and Hawaii changed the calculation making Belle Fourche the center. Either way, it was a fun afternoon adventure and definitely the type of thing we are looking to discover during our travels.
