Anyone who really knows my husband knows he LOVES breakfast. No. I mean he REALLY loves breakfast- Like in a crazy, obsessed, intense kind of way. He could eat breakfast foods for all three meals and be perfectly content. In fairness, he has a protein smoothie most mornings during the week and focuses on choosing a more healthy fare. But on the weekends? It’s game on. He gets to indulge and I get to indulge with him. When we moved here David was very curious to see what his favorite breakfast place would be. We have tried many different places over the past three months, but to keep this post from dragging on for pages and pages we will only focus on our top three: Magnolia Pancake Haus, Sweet Paris Creperie & Cafe, and NOLA Brunch & Beignets.
Magnolia Pancake Haus was the first place that caught our attention. It had wonderful reviews, and a sizable menu with plenty of options. David went with a berry mixed French toast selection, but I went with something a little more fun. I chose the Peaches and Pralines Texas shaped Belgium waffle. We both added some eggs and sausage to round out the meal, but overall we we’re very pleased. We gave Magolia Pancake Haus high marks for the quality of food and the wait staff. Overall we would rate this place a 7.5 out of 10.
Next up is Sweet Paris Creperie & Cafe. David surprised me one morning by finding this restaurant. We both love crepes, so we were excited to find this place only about 10 minutes away from us. My husband (a well known coffee snob) said this place has the best cup of coffee of any restaurant he has been to on our travels. That alone gives this place a 10 out of 10 for him. It also doesn’t hurt that the crepes are phenomenal and the fun French vibe definitely gives this restaurant top marks. I give it a 9.5 out of 10 coming in a close second to my favorite breakfast place of all time! (My favorite breakfast place is Omega in Surf City, SC).
The 3rd place on our top 3 list is NOLA Brunch & Beignets. This place was not even on our radar until our middle daughter (Savannah) surprised her dad with a birthday breakfast and day at the zoo. This was the place she picked for us to celebrate David’s 50th. Breakfast is a hot commodity in San Antonio! Restaurants fill up fast, so timing is everything. We read online that NOLA has a line out the door by 8:30 am on the weekends, so we got there at 8:15. As it was we ended up getting the last table inside. We ordered the beignets as a starter and were impressed. They were delicious and ranked up there with Cafe du Monde in New Orleans. For the main dish I went with Banana Fosters pancakes, but David went out on a limb and ordered a breakfast Po Boy. His choice was definitely the winner! It was flavorful and had just the right amount of food. Plus, the bread was cooked to perfection. The only drawback for this place was the slow service (not unexpected for such a busy morning), but they also forgot about two requests we made for additional coffee/honey. We still left a nice tip (always tip the wait staff) because we saw how hard they were working and because the food was delicious. Overall this is a must visit place in San Antonio, and we gave it an 9 out of 10! (Well done Savannah! Thank you!)
I will close by saying that David has really enjoyed the breakfast food options in San Antonio. All the restaurants have done a great job even with staffing shortages. The only thing my hubby has been disappointed in was the selection of unique donut places. Although he isn’t crazy about pastries like he used to be, he still likes to find at least one place that make
s the “best” donuts in town (just so he can have one). However, he never did find a place locally that “wowed” him. This is not necessarily a bad thing since he is not tempted to go eat there more often!! Despite that small disappointment, the breakfast options in San Antonio more than made up for it.
